Abstract

Organised Albanian research into natural risks in general began rather late, in the 60s, and has addressed particular aspects of this notion, including extreme phenomena of natural disasters and extraordinary events, such as floods, snow avalanches and earthquakes, and deals with causes, scale of action and their consequences in socio-economic life. Especially in the last years, during some scientific projects and in the Second National Conference of Geography (Shkoder 1995) a wealth of material was gathered in order to identify such phenomena and natural risks in Albania. This represents a marked contribution towards applied geography, due to its socio-economic importance.
