Zusammenfassung
Während die Identitätsfeststellung oder Identitätssicherung bei lebenden Personen häufig eine rein polizeiliche Aufgabe ist, gehört die Identifizierung — im rechtsmedizinischen Sprachgebrauch zumeist die Identifikation — bei aufgefundenen unbekannten Leichen oder Leichenteilen traditionell zu den Kernaufgaben der Rechtsmedizin. An der erfolgreichen Identifikation besteht erhebliches ethisches, rechtliches und kriminalistisches Interesse, denn sie ist eine Grundlage der verbindlichen Todesfeststellung für ein bestimmtes Individuum, ebenso wie die Grundlage der Aufklärung (oder auch des Ausschlusses!) eines zumeist schwerwiegenden Kriminaldeliktes. Nur durch sichere Identifikation kann gewährleistet werden, dass den Angehörigen auch tatsächlich „ihr“ Toter übergeben wird.
