Abstract
Structural investigation of materials at elevated temperature by synchrotron radiation and neutrons constitutes a powerful tool in material science. In order to characterize highly reactive liquids at very high temperatures, we have developed new instrumentation for large equipments including a high temperature analysis chamber. This system permits us to perform combined X-ray absorption and scattering measurements by using a laser heating furnace and aerodynamic levitation. Synchrotron radiation experiments have been performed at LURE (Orsay, France) and ESRF (Grenoble, France) and neutron scattering at ISIS (UK). We have studied the local structure around cations in various liquid and solid oxides at Room Temperature and at high temperature. We have shown that the synchrotron data combined with neutrons results contain valuable structural information on liquid refractory oxides as yttria and alumina.
