Summary of Geophysical Techniques

  • Chapter
European Margin Sediment Dynamics

Abstract

This Atlas highlights the huge volume of geophysical (and geological) data that was collected during the European North Atlantic Margin (ENAM) and Sediment Transport on European Atlantic Margins (STEAM) projects. Examples of the application of most geophysical techniques commonly employed in marine geological exploration can be found in the Atlas papers (Table 1). Many of the papers employ a combination of techniques, for example sidescan sonar images to map the surface sediment distribution and high-resolution seismic profiles to extrapolate this distribution into the sub-surface. In this way, a 3D interpretation of the sediment facies and processes which created the observed facies assemblage can be built up.
