Zusammenfassung
Das Knochenmark ist in die Spongiosa des Knochens eingebettet und enthält die Zellen des hämatopoetischen Systems. Der spongiöse Knochen und das blutbildende Mark stellen anatomisch und funktionell einemeinde Einheit dar, wobei die pathologische Wucherung einzelner Zellsysteme des Knochenmarks auch zwangsläufig Veränderungen des spongiösen Knochens nach sich ziehen. Hämatologische Systemerkrankungen verändern daher zunächst die Spongiosa, während die Kompakta erst später und sekundär in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wird. Daneben enthält die Spongiosa ferner je nach Lokalisation des Knochens eine unterschiedliche Menge von Fett, die unter dem Begriff des Fettmarks zusammengefasst wird, wobei sich hämatopoetisches Mark unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen in Fettmark umwandeln kann. Dies geschieht z. B. mit zunehmendem Alter oder auch durch bestimmte Noxen, z. B. Chemotherapie oder Strahlentherapie.
