Abstract

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report, “Crossing the Quality Chasm”, challenged physicians as part of the medical system to provide care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely, patient centered, and equitable [1]. Most intensive care physicians have little knowledge of whether they are achieving these aims. We generally do not systematically evaluate the quality of intensive care unit (ICU) care provided to patients and if we do, evaluation ceases when the patient leaves the ICU or hospital. With no capacity to evaluate the long-term impact of ICU care, it is difficult for intensivists to improve the care they provide, such that benefits are maximized and complications minimized. In this chapter, we will present a case of an ‘ICU success story’, review the gaps in knowledge and the available literature regarding the impact of ICU care, and propose an outhne for research in this area.
