Zusammenfassung

Auf wenigen Gebieten der Medizin finden sich so kurze Innovationszyklen wie in der grundlagenwissenschaftlichen und klinischen HIV-Forschung. Diese Forschungserfolge haben nicht nur 19 Jahre, nachdem Montagnier und Gallo das HI-Virus nachweisen konnten, zu einer deutlichen Lebensverlängerung, sondern auch zu einer gesteigerten Lebensqualität der HIV-Infizierten geführt. Seit dem AIDS-Weltkongress 1996 (Post-Vancouver-Ära) hat in den entwickelten Ländern der nördlichen Hemisphäre die Häufigkeit schwerer HIV-assoziierter Krankheitsbilder als Folge der Einführung der hochaktiven antiretroviralen Kombinationstherapie (HAART) stark abgenommen. Der Arzt ist heute vor allem gefordert, Zusammensetzung und Dosis der Medikamentenkombinationen (drei oder mehr antiretrovirale Medikamente) dem individuellen Krankheitsverlauf des Patienten anzupassen. Trotz dieser Erfolge, die allerdings im Wesentlichen auf die Industriestaaten der westlichen Welt begrenzt sind, bleibt HIV/AIDS in allen Ländern eine große Herausforderung.
