Abstract
It is truly sobering that the female breast — celebrated by poets1, a sex symbol, and a major source of income for plastic surgeons — is, from a phylogenetic standpoint, a modified cutaneous sweat gland. During ontogenesis, the human breast initially undergoes the same phylogenetic phases that occur in mammals with multiple paired mammary glands.
