Abstract
One of the most exciting moments of my life was in the spring of 1964 when I received Walter Kohn’s offer of a post-doc position in La Jolla. I was finishing up my Ph.D. but since my Irish scholarship had run out, I had moved from Cambridge to Birmingham to take a temporary teaching position. The combination of a top class mentor and beautiful sunny Southern California, seen from the perspective of the grey English midlands was overwhelming. I had heard only good things from my fellow student and friend Lu Sham who had joined Walter Kohn as a post-doc in the previous fall. So I arrived in La Jolla with high expectations in the fall of ‘64.
