Abstract
In the spring of 1967, to my great delight, I was offered a postdoctoral position to work with Walter Kohn in La Jolla, at the then munificent salary of $10,400 per year. I arrived late one night in October. Driving along some dark canyon road, I began to wonder what on earth I was doing there; it was a rather different place from Cambridge, Massachusetts where I had spent most of the prior ten years. As I soon found out, however,Walter and Harry Suhl had built a strongly interactive community in condensed matter theory that was better than many of the well-known groups in the East, and which drew outstanding people from everywhere.
