Abstract
Twenty two years ago I received a phone call from Walter Kohn. “I wish to offer you a postdoctoral position. Are you interested?” My answer was an immediate “Yes”. I had finished my degree at Illinois, had seen enough of corn fields and was ready to see some mountains and ocean. A year later I arrived at the Institute for Theoretical Physics then located on the sixth floor of the Ellison Hall at UCSB. The offices were about to become full. I kept a stack of several boxes of books and photocopied papers in my office. Walter Kohn once said of them, “They look like a radiation shield.”
