Abstract

I first met Walter Kohn when I moved to UC Santa Barbara in the summer of 1996, to assume the position of Vice Chancellor for Research. As I am an astrophysicist, I was invited to join the faculty of UCSB’s Physics Department. My first visit to my faculty office in Broida Hall was on a Saturday and I noticed that the door next to my office was open and someone was working there, in a nicely carpeted, bright and cozy room. I introduced myself to Walter Kohn, who was beaming broadly and welcomingly.
