Abstract
A permanent magnet (PM) motor for low speed applications has been developed by ABB. Used for decades in fast running applications due to its favorable weightto-performance ratio, the PM motor has now been adapted to provide high accuracy and reliability at low speed, eliminating the need for speed reduction gearboxes across a range of industries. Initially, however, the paper industry will be targeted, as paper machines require large numbers of high accuracy, low speed drives.
