Die Craniota haben den Kiemendarm im vorderen Teil des Darmtrakts von ihren Chordatenvorfahren übernommen (Abb. 5). Die Umstellung dieser von Cilien betriebenen Pumpe für die Bewegung des Atemwassers auf eine Muskelpumpe veränderte ihr Atmungssystem jedoch tiefgreifend.
