Abstract
Most artificial corneas are limited by their lack of integration into host tissue which can lead to infection and/or rejection (Chirila, Biomaterials 22(24):3311–7, 2001). To avoid this complication, several keratoprostheses have been designed to encourage the implant to integrate with the host. An ideal keratoprosthesis is clear, well tolerated and encourages host cell migration into the implant. A variety of techniques have been employed to accomplish this goal. Most integrative corneas rely on one of two methods: development of a porous design to mechanically induce cell migration or incorporation of biological materials within the implant to encourage cell migration via cell-to-cell signaling. These methods have been met with varying levels of success. The keratoprostheses featured in this chapter boost integration between the implant and the host tissue.
