Abstract
The visibility of everything is increasing due to social media and availability of information on the Internet. This is applying to medical issues as reporting on challenging medical situations is increasing. Neurosurgeons are playing and will play an important role in helping bridge the gap between the lay public and our noble profession. Typical cases which have appeared in the recent news include brain death, futility of care, use of resources, conflict of interest, and others, all of which have strong ethical dimensions. In fact these are the very types of issues which attract media attentions.
Interacting with the media can be daunting for those who are inexperienced and/or unprepared but is important to do well to help educate the public about these issues and put the best face of our profession forward. In this chapter the reader is introduced to the challenge neurosurgeons face interacting with the media, and some very practical tips for interacting with the media are provided.
