Abstract

The duties of neurosurgeons may be self-evident, but they deserve articulating. Once a doctor and a patient enter into a relationship, the neurosurgeon is duty-bound to put the patient first and to do his/her very best for the patient. There can be no compromise on this. Many individual duties contribute to the complete neurosurgeon who is able to provide this level of care for every patient.

In this chapter, the duties of neurosurgeons are discussed including communication with the patient and family, truth telling, duty to do his/her best, duty to work as a team member, duty to stay current, duty to respect patient’s rights, duty to train future neurosurgeons, duty to deal ethically with innovation, duty to deal with conflict of interest, duty to do research, duty to be a good citizen including membership in professional organizations, duty to undertake continuing medical education, duty to deal with conflicts of interest, duty to be a good doctor, duty to teach and acculturate the trainees with ethics, and duty to self-monitor.
