Abstract
This chapter briefly introduces the reader to the definition and history of bioethics. Two of the most important historical breaches of medical ethics which helped expose bad ethics and revolutionize medical ethics are briefly present – the Nazi medical war crimes and the Tuskegee syphilis study. The reader is also introduced to the concept of value-based medicine which represents an approach to patient care, analogous to that of evidence-based medicine. In this approach, attention to the ethical dimensions of what we do should inform our treatment decision for our patients in the same way that attention to the medical evidence does.
