Zusammenfassung
Das Auftreten von Essstörungen variiert erheblich zwischen verschiedenen soziokulturellen Gruppen sowie unter historischer Perspektive. Es finden sich sowohl Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen ethnischen Gruppen als auch Unterschiede zwischen unterschiedlichen Kulturen und zwischen sozialen Schichten in der sonst gleichen kulturell-räumlichen Umgebung. Ein Einfluss des soziokulturellen Umfeldes besteht auch unabhängig von genetischen Einflüssen oder einer defizitären oder schädlichen kindlichen Erziehungssituation. Den wichtigsten Aspekt dieser kulturellen Faktoren scheint der westlich geprägte, gesellschaftliche Druck zum Schlanksein darzustellen; Einflüsse von Seiten der Medien wie durch die soziale Umgebung (Peers und Familie) gelten als gesichert. Die Bedeutung der verschiedenen soziokulturellen Merkmale ist allerdings für die unterschiedlichen Diagnosen unterschiedlich ausgeprägt.
