Corneal Inflammation Following Excimer Laser Surgery

Immune Modulation and Anti-Inflammatory Therapy in Ocular Disorders

Abstract

Millions of surface ablation excimer laser surgeries are performed worldwide. The normal cornea, when photoablated, reacts in a way specific to this process. The fundamentals of this biological reactivity are based on the normal structure of the photoablated cornea and on the energy delivered by the laser.

Adequate management of postoperative inflammation is essential after photorefractive procedures. Successful modulation of the biochemical inflammatory process and cellular wound healing response seems to be important after surface procedures to achieve an excellent visual outcome. Finally, early detection and a suitable therapeutic approach can prevent undesirable sequelae of specific inflammatory conditions such as DLK, CTK, or TLSS.
