Abstract

Local resection of uveal melanoma was for many years restricted to small iris and ciliary body melanomas, mostly because of the technical difficulties associated with excision of larger and more posterior tumors and also because of theoretical concerns about inducing metastatic spread. Interestingly, as early as 1901, these concerns had led LaGrange to dismiss Rolland and Crepet as being irrational when they had advocated local resection in the late nineteenth century [1].
