Abstract

Phototherapy of uveal melanoma includes various forms of photocoagulation, thermotherapy, and photodynamic therapy (PDT), which can be administered as primary treatment of the tumor or as an adjunct to radiotherapy or local resection. Photocoagulation raises the tissue temperature above 60 ºC to cause coagulation of proteins and immediate cell death. Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) causes tumor cell death by raising the temperature to between 45 ºC and 60 ºC for about 60 s. Photodynamic therapy uses light to activate a photosensitizer, thereby releasing toxic free radicals, which destroy adjacent tumor cells and cause vaso-occlusion.
