Zusammenfassung

Das Eisenmenger-Syndrom ist kein eigenständiger Herzfehler (wie vom Erstbeschreiber zunächst angenommen), sondern bezeichnet einen relativ uniformen, inoperablen Zustand bei gleichzeitigem Vorliegen einer schweren pulmonalen Hypertonie mit einem Shuntvitium, wobei es durch Druckausgleich zwischen beiden Herzkammern zu einer Shuntumkehr gekommen ist.
