Abstract

The optical properties of metal island films are discussed as a particular case of nanostructured coatings. The properties of the effective optical constants of a metal island film are extensively discussed with a focus on copper and silver island films. Design considerations are taken into account as well as simple approaches for optical monitoring of the growth of interference coatings with incorporated metal island films.
