Abstract

At The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one-third of native liver biopsies are performed for the evaluation of cholestasis in the neonate and infant, and diseases of the biliary tree represent a significant group of disorders in the differential diagnosis of neonatal cholestasis. The pathologist’s role in the evaluation of biopsies in these entities is often pivotal as to the timing and need for surgical intervention and orientation of the clinical evaluation. This chapter will begin with a general overview and discussion of cholestasis in the neonate and in the older child, to be followed by a discussion of individual entities.
