Abstract

The expectation of taming the energy production like that in the sun by light-ion nuclear fusion reactions in magnetic-confinement (“Tokomak”) or inertial-fusion (Laser) devices has not been fulfilled yet, but remains an important issue (see e.g. the construction of the ITER facility). The implementation of the idea of performing the relevant fusion reactions with spin-polarized fuel could improve the reaction yields substantially and thus facilitate the attainmant of the energy “break-even” of such fusion reactors. The obstacles to the practical realization of these ideas are still high and require intense research. Another very interesting application is the project of “Transmutation” of nuclear waste from nuclear reactor facilities using spallation by protons from a powerful linear accelerator and transformation of long-lived and transuranic waste into shorter-lived isotopes that can be handled more easily.
