Zusammenfassung

Nach den kardiovaskulären und onkologischen Erkrankungen sind psychische Störungen bei älteren Menschen am dritthäufigsten. Dabei dominieren Demenz, Depression und Sucht.

„Die Alzheimer-Demenz ist eines der größten medizinischen Probleme der heutigen Welt. Die Verbesserung der Gesundheitsfürsorge und die außergewöhnliche Reduzierung der Infektionskrankheiten führten zu einer schnellen Zunahme der Gruppe der über 65jährigen. In einigen Regionen der Welt haben 15–23% der Bevölkerung dieses Alter überschritten. In dieser Gruppe weisen 11–15% der Menschen eine mehr oder weniger ausgeprägte Abnahme der intellektuellen Leistungsfähigkeit auf, wobei die Alzheimer’sche Krankheit in über der Hälfte der Fälle eine wichtige Rolle spielt“ — WHO 1981 (53).
