Zusammenfassung

Die Beziehungen zwischen der Nebennierenrinde und den Geschlechtsorganen sind so zahlreich und eindeutig, daß sie schon vor der Geburt der Theorie der inneren Sekretionen bekannt waren. Schon Haller beschrieb im Jahre 1800 eine angeborene Aplasie der Nebennierenrinde und der Sexualorgane. Weiter wiesen in den ersten Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts Cooke (1803), Bevern und Roemffil (1803) und Tileslus (1805) auf die sexuellen Alterationen der Nebennierentumoren hin, die später unter dem Namen „Adrenogenitales Syndrom“ bekannt wurden. All diese Erscheinungen führten Meckel zur Aufstellung einer Lehre von außerordentlicher Scharfsinnigkeit: Die Nebenniere stände in Beziehung zur sexuellen Reifung und wirke auf irgendeine Weise als „akzessorische Drüse des Geschlechts201C. Man darf dabei nicht vergessen, daß zu jener Zeit keine andere Funktion der Nebenniere bekannt war und man noch weit entfernt war von der Lehre der inneren Sekretion, um die Genialität dieses Standpunktes zu verstehen. Diese Theorie eilte ihrer Zeit zu sehr voraus und geriet deshalb bald in Vergessenheit. Trotz der zahlreichen Tatsachen, die in den letzten Jahren bewiesen haben, daß diese Gedanken ganz und gar richtig sind, und trotz der großen Anzahl von Forschungsarbeiten dauert das Schweigen, in das die Meckelschen Ideen gehüllt wurden, noch nach 150 Jahren an. Wir staunen, wenn wir heute noch Lehrbücher der Physiologie und Gynäkologie antreffen, in denen man jegliche Beziehung zwischen der Nebenniere und dem Geschlecht verkennt, und man die Nebenniere nur als eine Drüse betrachtet, die dazu dient, die metabolischen Funktionen des Organismus zu regulieren.
