Abstract

The incidence of stroke in the USA and Europe is about 200/100000 population per annum and increases in patients > 75 years old to 1440/100000, while the yearly incidence of death caused by stroke is 5–10% of all deaths (1–3). About 60% of survivors remain disabled (4). The costs for all the patients with cerebrovascular diseases in the United States is 15 billion dollars/year and are still increasing. Nearly 40–50% of all the strokes are caused from occlusive disease of carotis bifurcation (4).
