Zusammenfassung
Um ein System bezüglich seines energetischen Zustandes zu kennzeichnen, benutzt man thermodynamische Funktionen. Bei den Systemen der Biochemie handelt es sich in den meisten Fällen um Lösungen, die unter konstantem Druck stehen, daher wird hier als Funktion die freie Energie bei konstantem Druck, d. i. die freie Enthalpie G 1, gewählt. G hängt mit den Funktionen U der inneren Energie, der Entropie S, der freien Energie F (bei konstantem Volumen) und der Druck-Volumenarbeit p V wie folgt zusammen:
Änderungen des Systems durch chemische Reaktionen machen sich durch Änderungen von G bemerkbar ; endliche Änderungen werden durch das Zeichen ∆ gekennzeichnet. Ist bei isothermer und reversibler Führung des Prozesses die Änderung der freien Enthalpie δ G= 0, so herrscht Gleichgewicht (G hat an dieser Stelle ein Minimum). In abgeschlossenen (adiabatischen) Systemen lautet die Bedingung δ S = 0 (S hat hier ein Maximum).
