Abstract
Detailed knowledge of the flow patterns in arteries, and especially in bifurcations, is of high clinical interest for two reasons. First, atherosclerotic lesions can be diagnosed by detecting the flow disturbances induced by these lesions. Second, there is increasing evidence that the genesis of atherosclerotic lesions is associated with areas of low shear and recirculation rather than high shear [1].
