Abstract

In this study, aortas of 12 rabbits with experimentally induced atherosclerosis were investigated by duplex sonography. The sonographic features of the aortic vessel wall showed parallel wall contours enclosing a hypoechoic space. In vivo experiments in rabbit aortas document the distance between these contours correlating histologically with high cholesterol diet. This diet caused a broadening of the hypoechoic space in the rabbit aortic vessel wall. A comparable correlation was found between the width of the hypoechoic space and the severity of atherosclerotic changes.

The data demonstrate that duplex sonography is a useful non-invasive approach for detection of very early atherosclerotic changes in arterial vessel walls before plaques can be identified.
