Abstract

Needle biopsy is now a well-established method for the diagnosis of various localized lesions in the lung. “Blind” biopsies involving the insertion of needles into the lung were performed as long ago as 1882, long before the discovery of roentgen rays. As early as 1936, Sappington and Favorite reviewed 23 reports by different investigators who had performed a total of more than 2000 lung biopsies in order to culture bacteria. There was one death in this series. In a series of 60 lobar pneumonias (before 1938), empyema occurred in only 5% following lung puncture. In another group of patients (from the same period), comprising 1913 cases of lobar pneumonia conservatively treated without puncture, the incidence of empyema was 5.1%. These and other studies have shown that (even in early experience with large-caliber needles) the risks of local spreading of material by needle biopsy are usually lower than one might anticipate. The usefulness of needle biopsy of the lung has repeatedly been documented. Thus, several books deal with this topic (Dahlgren and Nordenström 1966; Deeley 1974; Sinner 1976, 1982; Struve-Christensen 1976; Nordenström 1980 a, 1981 a, b). They also include many references dealing with various aspects of needle biopsy of the lung.
