Abstract

This chapter is intended to be an introduction to some physical aspects of one-dimensional (1-D) metals, in particular to their instabilities which are due to the electron-phonon interaction. We discuss the Peierls instability and the associated charge density wave (CDW), as well as the effects of the electron-phonon interaction on the phonon dispersion, i.e. the Kohn anomaly. In 1-D metals the conduction electrons can couple with internal (intramolecular) or with external (intermolecular) lattice vibrations. An example for the latter case is the quasi 1-D metal KCP which is the most thoroughly studied system. Based on the theory developed in Sect. 5.3, 4 we discuss the transport properties, diffuse X-ray and inelastic neutron scattering experiments as well as the optical properties of KCP.
