Abstract

In this chapter we study the role of phonons in ferroelectric phase transitions. Section 3.1 is devoted to a description of general properties of ferroelectric materials. In Sect. 3.2 ferroelectric materials are classified on the basis of materials and structures, and the static dielectric properties of selected ferroelectrics are discussed. Section 3.3 contains the thermodynamic aspects of ferroelectric phase transitions on the basis of Devonshire’s theory; first- and second-order transitions are discussed. In Sect. 3.4 the general aspects of the lattice dynamics of displacive ferroelectric phase transitions are presented, including the lattice dynamical basis of Devonshire’s theory. Section 3.5 contains a discussion of some lattice dynamical models used for the study of ferroelectric phase transitions. The soft-mode spectroscopy of selected ferroelectrics is discussed in Sect. 3.6. Section 3.7 contains a short discussion of quantum ferroelectricity, while Sect. 3.8 is devoted to disordered polar systems. The last section contains a number of illustrative problems.

  68. Recently, it has been suggested that Ta substitution by Nb leads to frequency-dependent susceptibilities reminiscent of an electric-dipole glass [G. Samara: Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 298 (1984)].
