Abstract
Compact fluorescent lamps are much higher loaded than normal fluorescent lamps. During operation their tube wall therefore warms up more than that of the traditional fluorescent lamps. This would lead to a shift of the light output vs. temperature curve to lower temperatures and to a reduction of light efficacy. For this reason DULUX lamps have specially formed ends to cause cold spots in the outer corners of the tube bow.
In the base up and horizontal burning positions of the lamp the cold spots at the lamp end lead to optimal conditions for the normal application. In the base down position, however, these cold spots are not as effective.
To optimize also the temperature behavior of the lamps burning base down it is useful to provide a further cold spot near or within the base of the lamp. In OSRAM DULUX D lamps this cold spot is provided by a prolonged exhaust tube reaching down to a hole in the base bottom. If desired the cooling of this cold spot can be enhanced by using a socket which allows air to stream throug the hole. So the lamp in the base down position can be still better adapted to very small and strongly heat conserving fixtures.
