Zusammenfassung
In der Einleitung zu Kap. D, S. 254 ff. wurde dargelegt, welche Gründe für die Einführung des Krackens, und zwar zuerst des thermischen und später des katalytischen Krackens maßgebend waren. Dieses ist heute das wichtigste Verfahren der Erdölindustrie, durch das die Mengen einzelner Fraktionen gegenüber den im Rohöl vorhandenen verändert werden können. Das anschließend daran behandelte Reformieren bezweckt im Gegensatz dazu die Änderung der chemischen Struktur einer bestimmten Fraktion und erzielt dadurch eine Verbesserung der für die Verwendung des Benzins als Kraftstoff sehr wichtigen Eigenschaft, nämlich der Klopffestigkeit. Die dabei auftretenden Reaktionen ändern wohl den chemischen Aufbau der Moleküle, jedoch weniger die Siedelage der Erzeugnisse. Dies gilt allerdings nur mit gewissen Einschränkungen, denn infolge der hohen Reaktionstemperatur werden auch leichtere Komponenten in beträchtlicher Menge erzeugt, weil das Auftreten gleichzeitiger Krackreaktionen nicht zu vermeiden ist. Durch die Anwendung von Katalysatoren lassen sich diese zwar stark zurückdrängen, jedoch nicht ganz unterbinden. Somit kommt es in beiden Fällen zur Bildung von mehr oder weniger großen Mengen von C1- bis C4-Kohlenwasserstoffen. Daneben entsteht besonders beim katalytischen Reformieren noch Wasserstoff durch die angestrebte Dehydrierung von Naphthenen zu Aromaten.

Unter „coalescer“ versteht man eine Art Filter mit Raschigringen, Drahtgewebe oder ähnlichen Einbauten, dessen Aufgabe es ist, fein verteilte Flüssigkeitströpfchen zusammenfließen zu lassen, um sie anschließend besser abscheiden zu können. Eine verständliche deutsche Übersetzung des Ausdruckes hat sich bisher noch nicht eingebürgert. Das Wort kommt von coalescere (lat.) = zusammenwachsen, verschmelzen; vgl. Koalition.

Dabei ist zu beachten, daß die einzelnen Isomeren bezüglich ihrer Klopffestigkeit bei den verschiedenen Verfahren ungleich bewertet werden. Daher hat eine solche Rechnung nur begrenzten Wert. Es genügt die Überlegung, daß sowohl der Anteil von 2-Methylbutan wie auch die Summe beider i-Pentane möglichst groß sein soll, um ein Maximum an Klopffestigkeit zu erzielen.
