Abstract
There is a close link between innovations and spatial factors. On the one hand, technological inputs are an important determinant for the development of regions and the spatial division of labour (Stöhr 1986; Keeble/Wever 1987; Porter 1990; Oakey 1994). On the other, “a specific regional economic structure, which can be described as the simultaneous existence of sectoral specialization and function differentiation ... (forms) the framework for innovative regional developments” (Kilper et al. 1994: 29).
Parts of this contribution are based on research kindly supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft within the framework programme “Technological change and regional development in Europe”.
