Abstract
Together with financing, marketing constitutes one of the most difficult management tasks in new technology-based firms. Founders have hardly ever had any previous experience in this area. To begin with they are more researchers than entrepreneurs, and they fail to take sufficient account in their planning of the time and expense hat will be incurred up to the successful market entry of the new products and processes. The high complexity of research and development (R&D) projects often leads to the extention of the originally planned development time, thus delaying market entry. Experience has shown that founders often commence their marketing activities too late. They underestimate how long it will take to bring customers to the decision to purchase, to counter resistance to market entry, to build up a distinctive image for their firm and to create an effective sales organization.
