Abstract

The distribution of synaptic contacts for each animal will be presented in relation to the laminar cytoarchitectonic pattern of the cortex. By using cytoarchitectonic landmarks, synaptic distributions from different animals and different ages may be meaningfully compared. The determination of synaptic locations (in relation to perikaryal layers) is also used to delineate loci in which we may identify the postsynaptic elements. The cytoarchitectonic features of newborn somesthetic cortex will be described, and then the distributions of synaptic contacts will be presented.
