Transition Radiation

Abstract

Transition radiation is emitted when a source, for example, a charged particle, is moving with a constant velocity in an inhomogeneous or a nonstationary medium. Basic formulas for X-rays emitted by an ultra-relativistic charged particle traversing a periodic medium are discussed. Experimental test of theoretical predictions are surveyed and current applications of transition radiation for particle identification, energy measurement, beam monitoring, and for providing a tunable source of hard X-rays are described.
