Abstract
The Austrian balance of payments has experienced major changes during the eighties as compared to the seventies, the most striking being the switch from large current account deficits to a more or less balanced current account from 1982 on. More precisely: After yearly deficits of nearly 2% of GDP on average in the period 1974 to 1981 the current account showed an average surplus of somewhat less than 0,2% of GDP in the period 1982 to 1989. From 1990 to 93, a period which was much influenced by special events like the German unification and the opening of former Communist countries, the current account remained more or less unchanged on average.
