Design and implementation of a global reference mechanism for data objects

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Informatik aktuell ((INFORMAT))

Abstract

This paper describes an implementation of a global reference mechanism and its integration with multimedia mail projects. The mechanism consists of two services, the External Reference Production (ERP; [6]) service, for storing data in a remote store, and the Referenced Data Transfer (RDT; ISO/IEC 10740, [15], [161) service, as the retrieval component. The whole mechanism is based on the concepts specified in the Distributed Office Applications Model (DOAM; ISO/IEC 10031, [13], [14]) standard.

The system was developed at GMD Fokus using the ISO Development Environment (ISODE, [8]), in order to make it easy to port the system to different platformsl, and to ensure OSI [9] conformance. To our knowledge, the system includes the first realization of the standardized RDT service element.
