The Morphology-Dependent Rheological Behaviour of an Immiscible Model Polymer Blend

Abstract

In this paper, the viscous behaviour of a model immiscible polymer blend has been investigated, using both rotational and capillary rheometry. The blend is composed of a Poly-isobutylene (PIB) and a Poly-dimethyilsiloxane (PDMS), both room temperature liquids. PIB is essentially Newtonian over a wide range of shear rates, with a viscosity strongly depending on temperature; PDMS is more viscoelastic and shear thinning. Viscosity measurements on the pure components and on blends of different compositions were performed at temperatures of 23°C and 9°C. In this paper, only results for two blend compositions at 23°C will be presented. The experimental data are compared with viscosity “mixing rules” available in the literature.
