Abstract
The paper develops a combined land-use transportation planning model to minimize the total combined energy (or cost) of transport, land use development, and demolition of existing activity. The model takes the form of a largescale linear programming problem with a sparse structure. The problem may be solved efficiently by decomposing it into sub-problems using Benders (1962) technique. The model is extended to include gravity type trip distributions, gaming solutions, multiple objectives, variable development densities, congestion and multiple planning periods.
