Abstract
The use of log-linear models of multi-dimensional contingency tables in identifying the fundamental structures of observed travel accounts is described. It is pointed out that existing transport models such as the gravitational and logit families may be considered as special cases of the more general log-linear framework. The approach is illustrated through analyses of the Statistics Canada travel to work survey conducted in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area in 1978. The approach advocated in the paper will help to bridge the gap between travel models and travel accounts.
