Abstract
Apart from CO2 and atmospheric water, the major radiatively active trace gases are CH4, N20, tropospheric and stratospheric O3, CFCl3, CF2C12, and CHC1F2. With exception of ozone, the average residence time of all these substances is longer than 5 years, in most cases even longer than 20 years. The longer the residence time of a gas is, the smaller is the variability of its measured mixing ratios. Thus, only a few measurements are required to determine the increasing global trend of almost all radiatively active gases. In general, these few measurements can be conveniently made with classical techniques, and there is no urgent need for the development of remote sensing techniques for this purpose. In particular, however, the development of special instruments for remote sensing of ozone and water as well as for flux determination of methane may be of interest for the community of atmospheric scientists. These examples will be discussed shortly.
