Abstract

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is probably a primary neurogenic abnormality. Decreased motion leads to deformity, muscle atrophy, musculoligamentous contractures, and joint ankylosis. On autopsy, a decrease in the size of the spinal cord, a decreased number of anterior horn cells, and signs of motor demyelinization are found [1]. In some cases autosomal recessive inheritance is likely, but most cases are sporadic. The clinical picture is characterized by: limitation of active and passive motility, symmetrical joint contractures (usually flexion contractures), pes equinovarus, hip dislocation (mostly bilateral), and scoliosis (15%–40% of cases). Congenital heart anomalies, microcephaly, esophageal atresia, and genitourinary malformations have also been described [2].
