Abstract

According to Hax and Candea (1984, p. 325), a project is a complex and large scale one-of-a-kind product or service, made up by a number of component activities, that entails a considerable financial effort and must be time-phased, i.e. scheduled, according to specified precedence and resource requirements. Examples for projects are (cf. Levy et al. (1963) and Hax / Candea (1984)):

  • Construction (of buildings, infrastructure, new plants etc.).

  • Manufacture and assembly of large products (like ships, generators etc.).

  • Repair and maintenance (of nuclear plants, oil refineries, etc.).

  • Design, development, and marketing of new products.

  • Development and launching of new complex systems (like space missions etc.).
