Using Nd:YAG-Laser to Treat Bronchostaxis by Bronchscope on Dogs

Abstract

The gastrointestinal hemorrhage has been treated successfully with Nd: YAG laser by fiberoptic endoscope in clinic. A variation of this technique has been used to treat experimentally created bronchostaxis, the feasibility and histological changes were studied with excellent result. Seven health adult dogs of either sex were intubated with the melt brochscope under general anesthetized condition. A 1x1 mm small bronchial epithelial tissue was damped to creat bronchostaxis which treated with laser. The power at the tip of the fiber was 5 W, fiber to surface distance was 2 mm. The time of irradiation was 10 seconds. Cumulative energy consumptions was 50 Joules. The bleeding immediately stopped after laser irradiation. No bronchial perforation occured. All animal surrived. The dogs were killed at 0,1,3,7 and 14 days respectively. The restoration process of lesions corresponded to ordinary inflammation. By 7 days, the mucous membrane surface was smoth and by 14 days there was no any trace can be find. This pilot animal experiment showed that the treatment of bronchostaxis with the YAG laser is safe and feasible.
